MONEY MONDAY: Rent or Buy? That is the Tuxedo Question

After renting tuxedos for all your friends’ weddings, it is your turn. You get to decide what you want to wear and how you want to portray yourself on your special day. Your lovely bride purchased her spectacular wedding gown for several thousand dollars and you start thinking about buying a tuxedo. Should you?

Actually, it is a really easy decision. For most guys, yes – you should purchase your tux. One, you don’t have to match the other guys. Two, you will have a great tuxedo that is tailored specifically for you. Three, if you go to at least one or two events a year that you could wear a tux if you had one, the best money goes to something you own rather than throwing it away on a rental.

Consider this: You can purchase a really nice tuxedo for $750 (yes, we know – you can get one for $250 or spend $2,000). Renting a mediocre tux costs at least $150. It would take you EXACTLY FIVE tuxedo wearing occasions (including your wedding) to recoup the actual cost. Even better – no time spent at the rental stores or wearing previously owned sweaty clothing.

Just saying.
