Sometimes you need to break out of your comfort zone and try something new. We all are guilty of getting into a routine - including myself. Mixing up your workouts is the best way to cross train and achieve maximum results.
After two days of barbecues over the July 4th holiday, I needed a workout to burn off all that food! What better way to do that then with a class at Shred415. One of my friends, Tracy Roemer, co-opened the studio with her friend Bonnie Micheli, in early April. Shred415 is a total body workout based on the idea that interval training is the best way to burn fat and calories quickly. The hour-long class is divided into four 15 minute segments, alternating between cardio work on the treadmill and strength training, allowing you to increase muscle and burn calories.
So, how is this class something out of my comfort zone? I’m not a runner, nor a big fan of the treadmill, because of the impact on my joints. This class totally changed my perception. I took the Total Body class taught by Don Burgess. We started the class on the treadmill with recommended speeds/incline for walkers, joggers and runners. The mix of high energy music motivated you and kept it from being boring. Don also gave guidance throughout the interval, reminding you to stand tall and look straight ahead. However, the big selling point for me was the Woodway treadmills, which are not your typical treadmill. Woodways utilize a rubberized slat running surface, absorbing shock at the point of impact. It was so smooth, that I probably would not use a regular treadmill again!
The strength training segment consisted of a variety of high-repetition exercises, in one to two minute intervals. You select the intensity you want to work with, using dumbbells, body bars and resistance bands. Don was encouraging, adjusting students and cuing to ensure proper form and technique.
I left feeling sore with my legs feeling like lead, but overall it was a great workout and something I would do again. What is great about Shred415, is that you can choose the intensity and adjust as needed. I only walked during the treadmill portion and was below the recommended speed. However, this gives me the opportunity to build my endurance. Still skeptical? See for yourself and check out the other classes offered targeting specific muscle groups, such as back/shoulders, butt/legs and chest/abs.
