Fried Pickles at The Southern
Pickles. Anyone who has ever met me knows my affinity for all things pickled. I love pickles of every kind and origin but none more than a plain dill pickle chip, breaded and fried crispy. I may have been a Southern Belle in another life. There is something about a crispy and salty crunch of fried pickle that is addictive and delicious.
When it comes to fried pickles, I am decidedly a connoisseur. I have tasted many different kinds and the really good ones are not that easy to come by! Some are too soggy, some are coated with batter that’s too heavy, some are too greasy. It is a delicate balance. For me, it is all about the crunch, so soggy pickles need not apply.
Best fried pickles ever? Well, those were made by Chef Cary Taylor of The Southern - one of my favorite casual dining places in Chicago. Chef Taylor’s fried pickles blow away the competition. With an audible crunch, these beauties are cut thick and coated with grits! Brilliant! The inside is juicy and salty dill pickle, with a crunchy texture of its own. These babies aren’t on the menu, but believe me, they are worth rambling about!
How about it, Chef Taylor? New menu item? Just sayin’.

thanks for this post… i’m a total fried pickle addict too! current local fave is Lillie’s Q… the batter is crispy and abundant, but not greasy, and the pickles are cut thick and with delicious brine. have you tried these? i’ll definitely be headed over to The Southern soon to compare. research is so important when it comes to things like this, dontcha think?! thanks for the tip!
Thank you for reading, Nicole! Yes, I have had Lillie’s Q. Good effort. But they don’t touch The Southern’s. However, my suspicion is the reason the fried pickles aren’t on the menu at The Southern is because they ARE on the menu down the block at Lillie’s Q. The crunch of The Southern’s pickles is quite literally audible, and the grits coating is so crisp, it shatters.
And yes, I completely support your research!
