I recently saw a photo of myself from high school and, aside from my crease-free forehead, I was absolutely horrified. I’m sure you all know what sent shivers down my spine. My hair. All 30 pounds of it, as big as David Lee Roth’s in his Van Halen days. Granted, it was the 80s and I grew up in NJ, but still!
I later looked through my wedding album from 1999 and was happy to see that in my more mature days at the age of 28, I had given in to reason and chose and elegant up-do that still looks classic and timeless.
My point? Do not give in to trends when it comes to your hair on your wedding day! (And try to advise your bridesmaids against doing so as well.) You do not want to look back at your wedding photos and have that, “OH MY GOD! MY HAIR!” moment.
Specifically, I am talking about the side ponytail. Yes, it looks smashing on the red carpet on women like Nicole Richie, Carrie Underwood and Brittany Snow. It also looks great on my 9-year-old. This trend will surely leave within the year but you will have your wedding photos forever.
So, for your wedding day, channel celebrity looks that stand the test of time. Think Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy. Leave the trends to the flavor-of-the-month celebrities. And 9-year-olds.

I have been in the bridal/groom’s parties of 20+ weddings. Several of those required me to sport a hairstyle I would rather forget. Teasing, ringlets, high ponytails, side swept Flashdance look… The works. Guess what I am trying to say here is, don’t make your attendants sport a hairstyle that may come to haunt them later. Pretty please!
Great article Beth! Classic is best.
You should know, JD! I have not trusted anyone else with my hair for almost 13 years! Thank you, thank you for helping me stay on-trend — but not trendy — all of these years. xoxo
