Royal Wedding: Tea Time

One year ago, my Mum and I were steeping a pot of tea and…

Eye Candy: Must Have Shoes

As guests at a wedding, there are some things you’ll never see… and sometimes that may be the bride’s shoe.  Whether or not it’s seen by her guests, the bride’s choice of shoe for her special day is just as important as any other piece of detail surrounding the wedding . If it peeks out at you, try to catch a glimpse… or just watch the bride strut down the aisle in her fab shoes with a confident, happy glow.

Eye Candy: Golden Globes 2012 Red Carpet Review

While I’m not one to watch every award show, I do join the millions of women who must see the red carpet with all its glorious fashion.  Last night’s Golden Globes’ red carpet was no exception and, while there were many acceptable gowns, there are always a handful of stunners and a handful of complete mishaps.  Here are my picks in a few different categories.

Eye Candy: LBD

There is nothing more classic than the Little Black Dress.  It’s been the go-to for women worldwide since the early 1940’s, with Audrey Hepburn popularizing the Chanel LBD of her day.  Today, they come in all shapes, sizes, lengths and styles.  Given, these days we could also find what I will call the TBD (Tiny Black Dress), but really, let’s look like ladies as we strut our stuff this time of year.

Eye Candy: Layered up!

If there’s one thing I love about fall fashion it’s the chance to layer clothing as you like.  It’s the easiest way to add a pop of color or your favorite accessory without looking overdone.  Fall is all about layering.  It makes us feel trendy, cozy and luxe all at the same time.

Now, I’m not saying you should grab every accessory you can think of but the few pieces you can include in every fall outfit is a scarf, a bracelet, a belt and maybe a hat.  You’ll find me wearing a scarf or wrap with trendy earrings and a coat (trench or leather for fall, wool for winter) from October until March.

Eye Candy: Quality Time, Cuddle Time

When I heard about the “The 5 Love Languages”, I was immediately intrigued.  Who wouldn’t want to know what they are and which you speak most fluently?  The five are:  Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch.  At first, I thought that each language sounds loving in itself with the exception of Receiving Gifts.  But lots of people show their love by giving meaningful gifts and lots of people get that warm, fuzzy feeling when they receive such a gift.  So, it’s not as selfish as it sounds.

That being said, my hubby and I took the survey to see just how we “speak” love and it was quite interesting to compare.

Erwin & Candyce

My love languages, in order of priority, were:  Quality Time (9pts), Words of Affirmation (7pts), Physical Touch (6pts), Acts of Service (5pts) and Receiving Gifts (3pts).

What does this translate to?  Quiet, cuddle time with whispers of sweet nothings.  Ah, yes, I am that hopeFUL romantic.

The hubby’s languages, in order of priority, were:  Physical Touch (10pts), Words of Affirmation (6pts), Quality Time (6pts), Receiving Gifts (5pts) and Acts of Service (3pts).

Surprising results?  It doesn’t surprise me that my hubby’s top Love Language is Physical Touch but I was kind of surprised by the difference in priority between that and the next set of languages - tied at 6pts.  What’s most interesting, however, is that this language doesn’t mean it’s all about the bedroom.  As the website says, “Hugs, pats on the back, holding hands and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder or face – they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care and love”.  And that, my dears, is the quiet, cuddle time I love so much too.

Are the hubby and I a perfect match in love languages as well?  With four years of marriage and lots more years of being together, I’m going to say that we’ve learnt to compliment each other’s languages well!

Eye Candy: The Wedge

You may find me sharing lots of shoe finds here on ‘Eye Candy’.  Why?  Well, you see, my family is slightly obsessed with shoes.  I know most women love shoes but I would say that between my Mum, sister and I, we have close to 250 pairs of shoes… add my Grandma (who gave us the shoe gene) and my Aunts and we… won’t even divulge that total for the sake of seeming sane!

That being said, there are pairs of shoes that we buy for their versatility.  These are the pairs that can be worn over the years, with so many different looks, that they become a staple.  I’d say that this simple, wedge ankle boot is one of those staples.  It’s hot for this Fall/Winter but even if the leggings/skinny pants trend disappears (will it ever disappear?), you could still wear this pair of boots under wide leg jeans or just about any pant.  If you enjoy trendy looks and have lovely legs to show, wear them with tights and a skirt instead.  Me?  I’ll stick to pants.

Here are three options along with three different price tags to fit any budget.  Happy shopping!

Splurge!  The ‘Splurge’ can also be explained as the “investment”.  ;)

Moderate.  The staple with a bit of an edge makes this one a trendy buy.

Most reasonable!  A great buy at a great price that will keep you happily heeled.

Eye Candy: Hello Fall Fashion!

Now that we’ve passed Labor Day and the temperatures gradually drop, everyone who lives in a city that has four distinct seasons starts to think about switching closets from strappy tanks to cozy sweaters.

Unless you’re Carrie Bradshaw and have no budget, you don’t need an entire set of new clothes for every season, so mixing up a few trendy pieces from the current season with classic pieces from your existing wardrobe is key – and we can all still look as fabulous as Carrie!

There are three pieces that I think are great additions to every wardrobe and can be mixed and matched for different looks… they may also make their way into your classic pieces that can be worn year in and year out.

1. The Cozy, Chunky Sweater
This is a must.  Wear it solo during this fall season with skinny jeans, wedge booties, a bangle and cute earrings.  Or try adding a thin belt to show off your waistline.  Carry it over into winter with a skirt, tights and high-heeled leather boots.

2)  Skinny, Colorful Trousers/Jeans
This may be for the brave and fearless fashionistas out there, but pairing it with the right accompanying pieces of clothing and accessories could make these bright pants look effortless.

3)  A Patterned Top
A lovely printed top adds a touch of style to any simple outfit.  I love snakeskin prints as they’re slightly understated but fashionable.  This one has a billowy fit that can easily be worn with skinny jeans and riding boots or tucked into a skirt with tights and killer heels.

With these few items, you can create a trendy look that fits right in with the season – mix it up and make it your own!

Find any fabulous pieces that you’re planning on incorporating into your wardrobe this fall season?  Leave a comment – I’d love to try them too!

THE SOUTH AFRICAN BRAAI
by Candyce Paraggua

When friends ask me about the traditional dishes I grew up with, it’s difficult to answer.  Why?  I’m from South Africa, where the country’s cuisine is often called the “rainbow cuisine”.  South African cities have an eclectic and diverse mix of natives that include the Xhosa and Zulu tribes and descendants of the Dutch and British settlers and their slaves from Southeast Asia.  As you can imagine, this creates a South African smorgasbord in every home’s kitchen.  From my family’s kitchens, you could smell everything from comforting shepherd’s pie to spicy Indian/Malay curries.

The most popular dish, however, is more of an event:  the braai.  So popular, in fact, that South Africans celebrate “National Braai Day” on September 24 as a national holiday.  The full word is “braaivleis” – meaning grilled meat – and is now mostly referred to by the shortened, slang version, “braai”.

Braai (Photo from www.runnersworld.co.za)

On the typical braai menu, you’ll find T-bone steaks, lamb chops, peri-peri chicken (peri-peri is a a sauce made with the African birdseye chili) and veggie skewers.  On EVERY braai menu, you’ll find Boerewors – the traditional South African sausage, translated from Afrikaans as “farmer’s sausage”.  While most families pick theirs up from the local grocery or butcher shop, my Dad properly makes ours at home using minced beef and pork, lots of cumin, coriander, allspice, nutmeg and coursely ground pepper.  What you get after it’s been braai’d (yes, the word is used as a verb too), is a juicy, uniquely spiced sausage that has South Africa written all over it.  We have it as a snack while the rest of the meat cooks, but it can be eaten in a bun, with grilled onions and tomato relish (chakalaka), as a “boerewors roll” for the ultimate beer companion.

Boerewors Roll (Photo from www.simply-delicious.co.za)

As with all traditional ethnic dishes worldwide, it can be difficult to replicate those flavors and be transported back to your childhood home.  In the melting pot of the US, however, anything is possible and even those few traditional South African dishes have made their way over the Atlantic.  Aptly named “Braai” in New York City, has a menu choc-full of all my favorite goodies:  Boerewors, grilled chicken, Portuguese chicken livers and Peri-peri prawns.  While there is no such restaurant in Chicago (yet!), you can still find boerewors.  Take a drive out to Casey’s Foods in Naperville where you’ll find a pack in the fridges for about $12 or follow the Haute Sausage food truck and get the Boerewors Chakalaka roll for a delicious lunch fix.  If those fail, ask my Dad for a custom order and celebrate National Braai Day along with us on September 24!
