Love People. Feed Them.

I grew up in the former Soviet Union in an unprivileged family.  My parents’ monthly salaries combined at that time wouldn’t even amount to an equivalent of five dollars.  But even if we had more money, we wouldn’t be able to buy much with it.  Everything was sparse.  Including food.  As a child, I was no stranger to hunger or to an all-potato regimen, because potatoes were all that was available.  My childhood memories include spending hours standing in line for basic necessities, like bread.  I remember being pushed out of such a line at age seven because I was little and had to run home to use the bathroom, which lost me my place in line.  I remember crying in the freezing dead of Moscow winter because I couldn’t feel my toes and the frozen fish I was in line for ran out just before it was my turn.  I remember.

SQN Events: Jewish Mom Thankful for Christmas

On December 25, seven years ago, I received the best Christmas gift a nice Jewish girl from NJ could ask for:  my son, Jason.

Having a birthday in December is tough.  Even though we’re Jewish, Jason’s birthday often overlaps with Chanukah and our house began to look like a mini Toys R Us after his first few celebrations.

Cynics Corner: Now Hiring ~ The Bum at Water Tower

The holidays are like ecstasy;  they make people want to give.  And many make big contributions in December.  I don’t.  I prefer to give throughout the year because the needs of others aren’t seasonal.  Among various groups, I mostly give my time and money to Gilda’s Club Chicago, an incredible organization for cancer support of which I serve on the associate board of directors.

Mary Mary: Give Heifer

For probably the past five years, my mother has been donating to Heifer International.  They buy animals for needy families in impoverished countries with your donation.

Travel Messiah: The Angel Tree Project

In addition to managing travel, I also teach at a rural community college in mountains of southwest Virginia, about 42 miles from where I live.  The primary sources of jobs in the area are coal mining and farming.  It’s tough area in which to teach because many of those who reside in the college’s service area live at or below poverty level.

“Happy Holidays” & Other Four Letter Words

Thanks to our Travel Messiah Beth Smith for sharing this awesome blog post by Jennifer McGrail from The Road Less Taken ~ we loved it so much we wanted to share it with you!  MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The cashier was pleasant and friendly.  He joked around with the kids, and easily made small talk while he lovingly rang up our toothpaste and toilet paper.  He carefully bagged our baubles and breakables, and he made sure to ask if we wanted the drinks we’d just grabbed from the cooler left out.  He offered the three year old a sticker.  He smiled amiably while he handed me my cash register receipt, and he told me to come again.

And then, he said it.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Engagement Ring

As we mentioned, Elizabeth Taylor’s engagement ring from Richard Burton was up for auction Christie’s in New York City.  It was estimated to sell between $2.5 million and $3.5 million.
