FOOD FRIDAY: On a Rampage

Spring inspires people to do unexpected things (see my previous article FOOD FRIDAY: Spring Inspiration Tour).  Among farm visits, drinking rose wine (finally! rose is back!) and tasting a plethora of spring menus all over town, I was inspired to go on a rampage.  All because of a little plant called ramp.  Several times this week, people have asked me what a ramp is.  Words “spring” and “delicious” come to mind when I hear the word.  To me, ramps are true harbingers of spring on a plate.

FOOD FRIDAY: Thought for Today ~ Lord Byron

A woman should never be seen eating or drinking,
unless it be lobster salad and champagne,
the only true feminine and becoming viands.

FOOD FRIDAY: Love It Or Hate It ~ Food Photography

Thank you to Will Hodson, creator of the Platter app, for his article:  Food Photography: A Snappy Response.  Repost from The Guardian‘s Word Of Mouth Blog.

Sue Quinn’s recent post on WoM provoked considerable discussion on the etiquette of taking photographs at the table.  The consensus was that, especially in restaurants, discretion is paramount.  Three points cropped up repeatedly, both on our Twitter feed and the WoM thread.  First, no flash photography.  Second, no snapping other people’s food.  And third:  do it with a minimum of fuss.

FOOD FRIDAY: Goose for Your Maverick

So, your own personal Top Gun fantasy came true:  you met and tamed your Maverick, the rugged guys’ guy Tom Cruise only wishes he could be.  Your betrothed wears aviator sunglasses, rides a motorcycle and looks great in leather.  His favorite place in town?  Local brewpub.  He loves to throw back a beer or two in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.  And so you want your wedding-rehearsal dinner-big birthday or anniversary party to be something he remembers for years to come.  It needs to be fun.  It needs to be relaxed.  It needs to go with beer.  Does this mean that you have to settle for nachos or chicken fingers?  Not if you know Goose.

FOOD FRIDAY: Spring Inspiration Tour

With the sunshine and the trees budding, I always get the spring fever.  It isn’t driven by raging hormones or full moon.  What inspires me during the season of renewal is gorgeous spring produce.  Farmer’s markets start filling up with asparagus and peas and spring greens.  The color makes its way back onto the plate.  Freshness and youth are the flavors of spring.

I am the ultimate city slicker.  I live and play in the heart of the metropolis.  You could say I am pretty far removed from any conventional farm.  I am lucky to shop at the farmer’s markets here.  But visiting a farm?  That’s a road trip beyond the city limits.  Or is it?  When I signed up for Good Food Festival, I was surprised to see an Urban and Vertical Farm bus tour on the schedule.  Wait, what?  Urban and vertical farms?  This I had to see for myself.  So, bright and early on a Saturday morning I got on the bus.  That was the end of the expected.

FOOD FRIDAY: Sparkling Wine Consumption on the Rise

Thank you to Karl Klooster of the Yamhill Valley News Register for his article: Pinot’s Bubbly Possibilities

A survey conducted by Wine Intelligence USA suggests American consumers will be drinking more sparkling wine in 2012 than ever before.

Once considered a special occasion beverage, more people who enjoy wine on a regular basis are making sparkling wine a part of their regular wine selections, opting for the bubbly over other alternatives.
