FOOD FRIDAY: Spring Inspiration Tour

With the sunshine and the trees budding, I always get the spring fever.  It isn’t driven by raging hormones or full moon.  What inspires me during the season of renewal is gorgeous spring produce.  Farmer’s markets start filling up with asparagus and peas and spring greens.  The color makes its way back onto the plate.  Freshness and youth are the flavors of spring.

I am the ultimate city slicker.  I live and play in the heart of the metropolis.  You could say I am pretty far removed from any conventional farm.  I am lucky to shop at the farmer’s markets here.  But visiting a farm?  That’s a road trip beyond the city limits.  Or is it?  When I signed up for Good Food Festival, I was surprised to see an Urban and Vertical Farm bus tour on the schedule.  Wait, what?  Urban and vertical farms?  This I had to see for myself.  So, bright and early on a Saturday morning I got on the bus.  That was the end of the expected.

Dear Mr. Gourmet Rambler: Good Days, Bad Days

Dear Mr. Gourmet Rambler:

It’s wedding season.  Any trip to the mailbox this time of year provides proof that it’s here.  There are wedding invitations arriving by the dozen.  “The honor of your presence is requested…”  “Please, help us celebrate our union…”  “Together with our parents, we invite you…”  As my stack of RSVP cards grows, it becomes more and more challenging to stay positive.  Good days give way to bad days, when I don’t feel any great hope of you ever becoming anything other than a figment of my imagination.  Are you out there, really?  Hard to tell from where I am standing.

TUESDAY TIPPLE: Cocktail Surprises

Cocktail hour is always fun!  You mingle, drink in hand, you catch up with people or flirt with attractive strangers.  But when was the last time you had a cocktail that was truly memorable?  I am not talking about visiting a craft cocktail lounge where bartenders are akin to wizards.  I am talking about a wedding cocktail hour where complicated recipes have no place.  Do you recall any remarkable concoctions you have had at weddings?  Not likely.

TRAVEL THURSDAY: One If By Land, Two If By Sea

My affinity for all things delectable brought me to San Francisco on a whirlwind dining tour.  Lady with infamous appetite, I should have signaled my imminent arrival.  Instead, I snuck into Frisco to romp around incognito.  I had an agenda.  I wanted to taste as much of what the City by the Bay had to offer as possible and I wanted to do it on my own terms.  That meant far away from tourists of Fisherman’s Wharf.

FOOD FRIDAY: Irish Should Be So Lucky!

March 17th.  St. Patrick’s Day.  The day that EVERYONE claims to be a little Irish.  Here in Chicago, the river died green, green beer and silly green hats reign supreme.  A lot of Irish folks call our fair city home.  A lot of others claim to be Irish on March 17th, maybe in part to excuse their over indulgences.  There are parades and parties and drink specials galore.  Ours is the city that loves its celebrating.  “Kiss me, I’m Irish!”  Well, on March 17th at least.

So, you love champagne.  You aren’t alone.  I myself enjoy delicious bubbly.  But the real thing?  The one that says “champagne” on the bottle?  Well, that can get really pricey really fast.  If you are planning a weeding, a shower or a party, your love of all things bubbly can really cost you.  So what’s a bride, a bridesmaid or just any bubbly loving girl to do?

FOOD FRIDAY: In the Air

With warmer weather arriving in Chicago, spring is definitely in the air.  Go ahead, take a deep breath.  Smell that?  Spring in Chicago is announced by the aromas of BBQ.  Ours is the city that loves all things meat cooked over an open fire.  Block parties, cookouts, potlucks.  My neighbors break their grills out any chance they get.  The air on my block is always perfumed with delicious smoke.  I am no exception.  During warm months, I spend most of my time drinking rose and grilling in the backyard.

Ramble Worthy Bites: Frozen Custard

Enjoy my series on some of the best things I ever ate!  Every month in Ramble Worthy Bites, I will talk about something I have personally tasted and absolutely loved.  ~ Gourmet Rambler

Frozen Custard

I am not a dessert person, ask anyone.  I prefer all things savory and my favorite birthday cake EVER was made entirely out of sushi.  I don’t crave sweets, don’t mind life without chocolate and will take my caramel salted, thank you.  In my food adventures, I have eaten fancy desserts, pastries and candies galore.  I usually take a couple bites and then I am done.  I opt for desserts that are fruit based and not very sweet.  In fact, you can read about my thoughts on wedding cakes in my article Let Them Eat Tarts!
