Who’s the Bride? And Other Things Not to Say to Same-Sex Couples

Thank you to Bernadette Coveney Smith, Founder of Gay Wedding Institute, for her article:  Who’s the Bride?  And Other Things Not to Say to Same-Sex Couples.  Repost from HuffPost Weddings.

I’ll never forget the day that I went for a cake tasting with a pair of my brides.  We arrived to a bakery where I’d been plenty of times before and had great experiences.  When she saw us, the assistant who greeted us that day said, “So, which one of you is the bride?”

I get it.  Three women.  Surely one of them must be the bride, another the maid of honor and the third a sister or the planner – or anyone but another bride.  Right?

CJ & Dr. Tim ~ Our Take on Valentine’s Day

Hey all!

191 days and counting….

Happy Valentine’s Day (a day late) all!  We had a very romantic night – and by romantic, we went and got a little tipsy on margaritas and came home and listened to Whitney Houston all night (R.I.P.).  That’s pretty much how we feel about Valentine’s Day – it’s a day to give each other a card and say I love you but it’s pretty much the same as any other day (although we don’t give cards to each other every morning).

Michael Faltum: Righting a Wrong

A California federal appeals court ruled against the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage known as Proposition 8 (Prop 8).  The three-judge panel of the ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declared the ban unconstitutional because it directly discriminates against gays and lesbians. Although a split decision, the ruling found Prop 8 denied the right to a civil marriage and violated the LGBT community’s fourteenth Amendment rights.

CJ & Dr. Tim ~ Wedding Invitation Dilemma

Hey all!

198 days and counting….

WOW!  Less than 200 days to go!  It seems like so far away, but considering the month of January FLEW BY, we are assuming that this is the way it’s going to remain… each month passing by faster and faster.

IN THEORY: Large & Diverse LGBT Community

Many people were inspired to speak out against the statements initially made last week by Cynthia Nixon in a New York Times article about her gayness.  And that includes our same-sex activist Michael Faltum who wrote an amazing articles yesterday:  It Takes All Kinds.  We also enjoyed reading Frank Bruni‘s response:  Genetic or Not, Gay Won’t Go Away.  What a great perspective!

That has long been one of the rallying cries of a movement, and sometimes the gist of its argument.  Across decades of widespread ostracism, followed by years of patchwork acceptance and, most recently, moments of heady triumph, gay people invoked that phrase to explain why homophobia was unwarranted and discrimination senseless.

Lady Gaga even spun an anthem from it.

Michael Faltum: It Takes All Kinds

Sex and the City actress, Cynthia Nixon, set-off fireworks throughout the LGBT community last week when she commented in a New York Times interview that for her, being gay “is a choice”.  Critics of Nixon called her words “dangerous” and “irresponsible” and worried they would be used as ammunition against the gay community by anti-gay forces.

Since then Nixon sought to clarify her remarks in a statement to The Advocate, the gay and lesbian news magazine.  Nixon said, “My recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay… I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can’t and shouldn’t be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be un-inclusive and disempowering.”

CJ & Dr. Tim ~ Taking Stock of One Year & One Incident

Hey all!

205 days and counting….

Well to say the last two weeks have been an adventure would be an understatement!  On Thursday, February 19, at 11:30(ish) – the main hallway of our condo (common hall and staircase) caught on fire!  When the call came in, we were under the impression that there had been a small electrical fire, but when we saw the final damage, it was UNREAL!

Michael Faltum: Washington Seeks Marriage Equality; Opponents Seek Referendum

Doing what’s right isn’t always easy.  Putting your neck out on the line politically in direct opposition to your constituents doesn’t happen as often as it once did.  With Senate Bill 6239 and House Bill 2516 calling for marriage equality, this is exactly what Washington state lawmakers are doing.

Once State Senator Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, agreed to support same-sex marriage in Washington, lawmakers had the required votes necessary to push the bill forward and call for a vote.  The Senate committee will take up the issue this week while the House committee will begin as early as next week.  Governor Chris Gregoire had already committed to signing the bill once it reaches her desk.

FOOD FRIDAY: Diabetic-Friendly Chicken Dijon

Since theBrideScoop Food Friday is tackling the topic of diabetes this week, I wanted to provide our readers with a healthy dinner option that my family’s been making for over 20 years.  We began making this recipe when my grandmother was diagnosed with diabetes in the late 1980s.

Start with the Chicken (Photo from www.suzistorm.com)

I’ve made a few tweaks to it over the years to bring it up to date.  The original recipe called for margarine and I replaced it with extra virgin olive oil.  Instead of dried dill, I prefer fresh if it’s available.

Enjoy!
