Michael Faltum: Even in Politics People Can Change

Politics is often perceived as an exercise in the art of negotiation.  Political strengths are weighed in whether one can convince their opposition to agree to their point of view or at least stay out of the way long enough to get the job done.  While present day politicians appear inept at negotiation, many have accepted that change is inevitable and the truth is hard to ignore.

Michael Faltum: Marriage Equality Hits Home

Soon after the new Illinois legislators were sworn in on January 9, 2013, Representatives Greg Harris (D-Chicago) and Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) promised to pass the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, a bill granting marriage equality to everyone in Illinois.

Michael Faltum: Marriage Equality Wins!!!

Voters in Maine and Maryland have chosen to legalize gay marriage.  In Minnesota, voters there shot down Amendment 1, a state constitutional amendment that would have clearly defined marriage as only between a man and a woman.  We’re awaiting the final tally in Washington state, but as of now, it appears they have approved Referendum 74 also legalizing same-sex marriage.

FOOD FRIDAY: Dressing Up Pumpkin

If you love pumpkin, you’re in luck.  It’s that time of the year when pumpkin is taking over the menus of your favorite restaurants, Starbucks unveils its pumpkin spice latte and bakeries are lining their shelves with pumpkin breads and muffins.  Pumpkin isn’t just for dessert either.  As chefs across the country are proving, channeling the savory side to pumpkin has changed the way we look at this little orange gourd.

Michael Faltum: National Coming Out Day ~ Role Models

As I watched Sam Champion, Good Morning America (ABC) weatherman, announce his impending nuptials to his partner, Rubem Robierb, live on the air the other day it got me to thinking about how far we’ve come in society and how far we have to go.  It reminded me of my own childhood searching for any person or even a hint of someone to serve as a role model for a young, gay man.

Michael Faltum: Greatness Lost ~ Gore Vidal

Gore Vidal is dead.  Writers, intellectuals and satirists are without a king today.  Vidal’s passing leaves many of us, whether we know it or not, alone in an empty room gasping for air and warmth and light.  The outspoken iconoclast and always controversial writer died at 86 of complications from pneumonia in his Los Angeles home.

Michael Faltum: Chick-La-Blah

There is little remaining that could be said in regards to the recent backlash against Chick-fil-A for their long-standing support of anti-gay policies and hate groups.  They openly despise LGBT people and even their president, Dan Cathy, will only support what he considers to be “natural marriages.”

Michael Faltum: Boy Scouts Uphold Discrimination

I’ve never been a Boy Scout, nor have I ever wanted to be.  So, whenever I’ve heard arguments for or against allowing LGBT people to either participate in or volunteer for the 102-year institution, I never paid much attention.  To me, being a boy scout had no bearing upon my daily life.  That is, until now.

Michael Faltum: For LGBT Travelers, Safety Matters!

There are many things to consider when planning an overseas vacation:  where you’ll stay, what you’ll bring and what sites you plan on seeing.  Yet, for many LGBT travelers, safety ranks higher on that list.  LGBT couples have many safe options for international travel.  Most of Europe, Canada and the Caribbean offer a safe haven where “PDA” is not frowned upon but there are many more countries where you should think twice about before booking that magical trip or honeymoon.
