Our Comments on Foodie Registry Lunch Question ~ Wedding in Four Months!

Time for installation #19 of Foodie Registry’s “LunchDate” blog feature, where they ask a distinguished panel of wedding experts from across the country the same wedding related question and serve up the answers for our readers in one delicious post.

You should have a wedding planner.  Really, you should.  The reason is because no one besides your planner tells you what sort of things you want to make sure you have done when during your wedding planning.

Holiday Tradition: It’s GRAVY baby…

Thanksgiving is the best day of the year.  I LOVE Thanksgiving!

My Mother is not a great cook but is by far the best gravy maker of all time be it steak gravy, ham gravy and, of course, turkey gravy.  My cousins have been known to drink the gravy in a cup – they love it so much.  There is nothing special about it.  Really, just some mixing, tasting, adjusting seasoning and ladling it on everything on your plate because we can’t always guarantee the rest of the meal will be as good.

TIP TUESDAY: Pennywise & Pound Foolish

Really people, you are going to use email replies to save money?  You are going to have your guests search for the information they need to get to your wedding and figure out their own parking because you want to save $1.00 an invitation but you are getting married at First Presbyterian Church and dinner at Gibson’s Steakhouse!!!  So, let’s see, the steak dinner is probably right around $150.00 per person and the cost of First Pres is up there.  So that extra insert is worth one half the cost of ONE guest!

TIP TUESDAY: What does typeface say about you?

I am a bit of a typeface freak and I am proud of it.  I work very hard to find, or even create, the perfect typeface for the bride and grooms’ name.  To me, those are the most important words on the invitation.  It needs to reflect them but most importantly the setting and mood of the occasion they are inviting guests to attend.

When you getting married at a tried and true Chicago institution such as The Drake Hotel or the Palmer House, it is preferred that you use a fabulous script such as the one below:

TIP TUESDAY: Paper Needs vs The Environment

I am obsessed, literally, obsessed with paper.

We have paper from Italy, Thailand, India and other far reaches of the world.  But my favorite papers is from right here in the Midwest:  Wisconsin – where all the great paper companies live and breathe.  They are not only great paper makers, they are great people and love the environment.  It’s not just one company – it’s a few – but they all try to run their businesses in earth friendly ways that we respect and applaude.

We have struggled with the environment and making sure we aren’t flattening a rainforest with our invitations and, in that struggle, find paper that is either a high percentage post consumer waste or isn’t bleached or harmful to nature.  We have been asked throughout the years about the plantable papers and, as much as I think they are a good concept, a high percentage of guests will not plant them.  In the end, this environmental solution doesn’t really help and, in reality, that paper doesn’t really fit most of our clients needs and wants.

Most couples want to save a tree but still want a really impressive invitation that fits their high end formal occasion and plantable just doesn’t cut it.  So, in this struggle, we finally realized that we can do what we can in regards to paper and then donate money to the tree planting endeavors of The National Arbor Association, which I hold near and dear.

Our Stationery Savior is Peggy Lambert from Erickson Design and Lambert Letterpress and we promise she will save you from all kinds of stationery pitfalls you will find yourself in during the wedding planning process.

IN THEORY: Wedding Invitations are Complicated

It is about six months out from your wedding or civil union and it is time to begin looking for your fabulous wedding invitations.  Our Stationery Savior, Peggy Lambert of Erickson Design, has shared her thoughts on how to make your wedding invitation an indication of your special day.  Done.

Next, you work on the wording of the wedding invitation.  Who is inviting whom?  Date right?  Time good?  Addresses correct?  You think everything is perfect but wait!  Have at least one more person who has NOT seen your wedding invitations to proof them with fresh eyes.  Remember when we shared with you the time “Chicago” was misspelled in the proofs?  When you think the invitations are proofed, do it again!

And all this before you get your wedding invitations!  WHEW!!!  And then what?  Time to assemble all the pieces, make sure they are there and you ordered enough, put stamps on the RSVP cards, etc etc.  Allow yourselves a long afternoon to do this.  But you are not done yet!

Stamps.  Oh vey!  The bane of our existance!!!  The best tip we can give you is to assemble one wedding invitations completely and take it to your friendly (or more likely than not, NOT so friendly) post office and have them weigh your mini “package”.  The biggest factors are shape and weight in estimating your postage.  Square invitations will cost more than the traditional rectangular ones regardless of size.  And envelopes addressed in a different direction (think vertical) will cost more.

In theory, getting your wedding invitations selected, proofed and sent out, should not be that drama filled.  In reality, coming to an agreement on the selecting, wording, proofing, assembling, addressing and mailing will try the strongest willed of bride and grooms.

Our Comments on Foodie Registry Lunch Question

Time for installation #5 of Foodie Registry’s “LunchDate” blog feature, where they ask a distinguished panel of wedding experts from across the country the same wedding related question and serve up the answers for our readers in one delicious post.

The question this week was:  Share your favorite eco-friendly wedding tip that could also save the wedding couple money.

Ms. Piggy & Kermit - It IS easy to be green!

Beth Bernstein of SQN Events says:  “I recently discovered a fantastic website geared for the eco-savvy bride.  Recycled Bride is a very cool (and free!) marketplace where members recycle everything from designer wedding gowns to table decorations, bridesmaids dresses, shoes and even unused wedding gifts!  You can save a lot of money on high ticket items by making a purchase and give real meaning to the term “re-use.”  Plus, Recycled Bride donates a portion of its advertising to Global Green USA.”

Peggy Lambert of Erickson Design and our Stationery Savior says:  “One of the things we recommend is doing dual purpose items  – like a menu and place cards combo.  Or if your wedding and reception are in the same place you can do an escort card, program and menu combo.  It makes for a great keepsake!”

Our Editor-in-Chief Claudia Antony Zompa was quoted “Brides spend umpteen thousands of dollars on flowers and they will only enjoy them for 4-5 hours during dinner and dancing.  Why not donate them?  Random Acts of Flowers will arrange for timely pickup of wedding floral and deliver to healthcare patients in the community. You won’t even believe the happiness & smiles & tears of joy this brings to others less fortunate!”
