Holiday Tradition: It’s GRAVY baby…

Thanksgiving is the best day of the year.  I LOVE Thanksgiving!

My Mother is not a great cook but is by far the best gravy maker of all time be it steak gravy, ham gravy and, of course, turkey gravy.  My cousins have been known to drink the gravy in a cup – they love it so much.  There is nothing special about it.  Really, just some mixing, tasting, adjusting seasoning and ladling it on everything on your plate because we can’t always guarantee the rest of the meal will be as good.

She has had some missteps throughout the years making it too runny or too lumpy but I still love it everytime.  She even had a pyrex dish blow up and ruin all of it one year.  My sister’s grand idea to bake her turkey in a glass vessel and then have mom put it on the gas burner. That was a lesson learned by all and a great addition to family lore.

My Mom will not be here for Thanksgiving but will be in Atlanta, Georgia with notoriously bad cook, Aunt Jeanne.  So, she will be making her famous gravy and my Dad will be covering every inch of his plate with it.

I will miss them both this year and will be trying to replicate the goodness of the gravy at my sisters with the 17 of us.  May my Mom be by my side, in spirit, as I cross my fingers for no lumps.  My brother-in-law, Bob, will announce and make a huge deal if there are any lumps.

Here’s to be thankful for an amazing Mom that gave me the skill to make great gravy and the patience to deal with my brother-in-laws and more!
